ESR Grant Proposal Workshop (12th September)

The ESRs ran a Grant Writing Skills Workshop in Warwick during their Bi-annual meeting.  Around 40 Postdoctoral Researchers from across Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Life Sciences turned up to hear Professor John Harding (University of Sheffield) and Roger Singleton-Escofet (Warwick Research Impact Services), discuss how to write grant applications.  Participants then worked in groups to analyse a recent proposal submitted by Professor Harding, arriving at a similar score to the original reviewers!

ESR Seminar Series (13th September)

Jo Galloway and Yi-Yeoun Kim (both PDRAs at the University of Leeds) hosted a Seminar on ‘Bio-mineralisation: Inspiration for Material Science’.   This was part of the ESRs’ series of seminars designed to provide an introduction to aspects of crystallisation research.  The Seminar was followed by a useful discussion with those present.

Crystals in the Real World: From Chalk to Chocolate (14th September)

The ESRs ended their meeting with a stall at the University of Warwick’s Family Day, designed to coincide with the end of the British Science Festival.  Hundreds of children and their parents attended the stall to see how crystals form in nature and even control the properties of chocolate!
