Position
Principal Investigator
Location

Professor Fiona Meldrum holds a Chair in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Leeds.  Her research focusses on crystallisation, with major themes including biomineralisation, bio-inspired crystal growth, crystallisation in confinement, crystallisation in microfluidic devices, additive-directed crystallisation, and structure-property relationships of crystals.  With the remarkable materials that are biominerals, Nature demonstrates the extent to which it is possible to control crystal nucleation and growth.

A significant goal of Fiona’s research over the last 10 years has been to translate these biogenic principles to synthetic systems such that we can construct new crystalline materials – with tailor-made properties – by design.  She was awarded a 2017 RSC Interdisciplinary Prize, is Chair of the Editorial Board of the MRS Bulletin and is Director of the ‘University of Leeds Centre for Crystallisation’.  She also held an EPSRC Leadership Fellowship (2010-2015) and currently holds an ERC Advanced Grant.
